Watch Together

In this episode of Word Party, (Season 2, Episode 4, “The Opposite of Fun,”) Franny needs help learning opposite words. After watching, you might ask your child:

  • Do you remember what the opposite of forward is?

  • What about the opposite of up?

  • Can you think of some other opposites?

  • Why did Franny get upset with Kip when they were playing “Follow the Leader”?

Opposite Game

Directions can be a tricky concept for children, and opposites are even trickier! To help build your child’s skills in these areas, try this game:

  1. Call out a direction, such as forward, backward, up, down, left, or right.

  2. Your child will act out the opposite of the word you called out. Ex: If you say “forward,” they should move backward.

  3. Younger children who are not yet ready for opposites could just act out the word you said.

Cuddle Up and Read

There are lots of picture books about opposites! Pick one to read with your child or try this read-aloud of The Foot Book by Dr. Seuss.

Read along to the story here.

Encourage your child to find as many opposites from the book as he can. He could find the opposites himself, or if multiple children are playing, one group could find an opposite such as wet, while the other group finds its match, dry.

Opposites week continues with Splash and Bubbles and opposites yoga!
