Bug Bonanza Part 1
It’s Bug Bonanza Week! Today we’ll go on a picnic with Word Party, read a buggy book, create our own creepy crawlies, and sing about bugs!
Watch Together
In this episode of Word Party, (Season 3, Episode 12: “A Very Buggy Picnic,”) the babies help Kip learn about different types of insects. After watching, ask your child:
Why didn’t Kip want to have a picnic outside?
Which bugs did the babies see on their picnic?
Can you think of any other bugs?
How do you feel about bugs?

Cuddle Up and Read
If you have any bug books, grab one from the shelf and read it with your child. Or, catch this read-aloud of I Love Bugs! by Emma Dodd.
Read along to the story here.
Create Your Own Bug
Now it’s time to create your own bug! Gather any art materials you have around the house, like pom poms, cotton balls, pipe cleaners, construction paper, or anything else that looks interesting! Invite your child to use the materials to either recreate an existing insect or to make a brand new one from their imagination. Afterwards, you might ask your child questions about their bug, like:
How many legs does your bug have? Is that more or less than the number of legs insects have?
What does it eat?
Where does it live?
What makes your bug special?
Does it have any cool powers?
Let’s Sing! Bugs, Bugs, Bugs
To the tune of "Frere Jacques."
Big bugs, small bugs, big bugs, small bugs,
See them crawl on the wall?
Creepy, creepy, crawling, never, never falling.
Bug, bugs, bugs, bugs, bugs, bugs.
