Making Music Part 1

Welcome to Making Music week! Today we’re kicking things off with Julie’s Greenroom, an all-time favorite marching song, exploring sound with household items, and a sound hunt!

Watch Together

What better way to start off Making Music week than with Dame Julie Andrews and the Greenies from Julie’s Greenroom? In this episode, (Season 1, Episode 3: “Singin’ in the Room”), Josh Groban visits the theater and teaches the Greenies how to sing from the heart.

Make Music! “The Ants Go Marching!”

Did you catch “The Ants Go Marching” in that episode of Julie’s Greenroom? Why not make a little music of your own and sing it yourself! Here’s a refresher of the lyrics:

The ants go marching one by one, hurrah, hurrah
The ants go marching one by one, hurrah, hurrah
The ants go marching one by one,
The little one stops to suck his thumb
And they all go marching down to the ground
To get out of the rain, BOOM! BOOM! BOOM!

The ants go marching two by two, hurrah, hurrah
The ants go marching two by two, hurrah, hurrah
The ants go marching two by two,
The little one stops to tie his shoe
And they all go marching down to the ground
To get out of the rain, BOOM! BOOM! BOOM!

(REPEAT until you reach ten.)

The ants go marching three by three,
The little one stops to climb a tree

The ants go marching four by four,
The little one stops to shut the door

The ants go marching five by five,
The little one stops to take a dive

The ants go marching six by six,
The little one stops to pick up sticks

The ants go marching seven by seven,
The little one stops to pray to heaven

The ants go marching eight by eight,
The little one stops to shut the gate

The ants go marching nine by nine,
The little one stops to check the time

The ants go marching ten by ten,
The little one stops to shout "The End”

Exploring Sound Experiment

This simple experiment from The Artful Parent allows children to explore sound using just a few household items. Click below for the instructions, and post pictures of your own sound experiment using #HensonAtHome to Facebook, Twitter, or Instagram!

Go on a Sound Hunt

Sounds are all around us if we listen for them! Invite your child to go on a sound hunt around your home. Provide a small notebook or piece of paper, encouraging her to write down the sounds she hears, (Ex: computer keys, music from the radio, etc.). If your child doesn’t yet know how to write, she could draw a picture of what she hears, or you could write down the words for her as she identifies each sound. Afterwards, you might go on another sound hunt outside, comparing what you heard.

Coming Up Next…

Making Music week continues with Word Party instrument play, a sound matching game, and more!
