Shooting Stars!

Buddy and his prehistoric pals have gone on camping trips and explored the night sky in many episodes of Dinosaur Train, the popular PBS KIDS series proudly supported by Kiddie Academy. Kiddie Academy’s education team has created a fun activity about shooting stars. They’ve tapped into the hands-on play that kiddos love while also incorporating critical thinking skills!

With help from a grown-up, you’ll need:
- Wooden Craft Sticks
- Rubber Bands
- Plastic Spoons
- Plastic Bottle Lids
- Pom Poms

Step One:  Take eight craft sticks and rubber band them together.

Step Two:  Take two additional sticks and secure one at the top of the eight sticks and one at the bottom. Hold the ends of the two craft sticks to form a V. Take a plastic lid and put a pompom in it. Try launching the pompom with the lid under it and again without the lid.

Step Three:  Place the plastic lid on the top craft stick and let go of the sticks to launch the pompom.

STEP FOUR: Think about the following questions:

  1. What happens if we add more pompoms to the plastic lid?

  2. Which will launch faster:one pompom or three?

  3. What could we use instead of pompoms to be the shooting stars? Marshmallows? Cotton balls?

  4. How does this remind you of a shooting star?
