Bird Week is about to fly away, but first we have some fun things to do! Today we’ll hear the tale of two dicky birds with Mother Goose Stories, learn a fingerplay, read a book about birds, and draw a bird picture.

In this episode of Mother Goose Stories, (Season 1, Episode 6: “Dicky Birds,”) two little dicky birds want to become royal dicky birds. After watching, you might ask your child:

• Why weren’t the dicky birds allowed to be in the royal garden at first?

• How do you think that made the dicky birds feel?

• Why did the royal gardener ask the dicky birds to come back?

“Two Little Blackbirds” Fingerplay

Fingerplays teach children all kinds of skills, like rhythm, rhyme, and coordination. Since fingerplays and nursery rhymes have been passed down through the generations, their wording often varies from person to person. Check out this fingerplay, “Two Little Blackbirds,” which is a variation of “Two Little Dicky Birds.”
